In conclusion, the Scandinavian legacy left in Britain by the Vikings is still evident today. The borrowing and assimilation of language was continuous throughout the Viking period, and the character of the Scandinavian words implies that the invading Norse peoples interacted with and married Anglo-Saxons. The new vocabulary was more general than anything else, and many of the most common English words of today are often derived from Old Norse. The Scandinavia imprint on Britain was very deep indeed. The Scandinavians managed to penetrate nearly every British domain; they affected the law system of the Anglo-Saxons, they modified the agricultural system in areas of the Danelaw, there are thousands of place-names of Scandinavian origin, Viking rune-stones have been found in certain areas, and the English vocabulary has been very much influenced by the Norse language. The intimate Germanic relationship between the languages of the Anglo-Saxons and Scandinavians allowed for the more profound borrowing of grammatical words like pronouns and verb forms. Because languages rarely borrow grammatical elements from other languages, the Scandinavian influence on third person plural pronouns and the verb to be is evidence of the substantial linguistic effect of Old Norse on the English language.

To summarize the influence of Norse mythology on J.R.R. Tolkien’s works, one can say that many analogies can be found and that traces of Norse mythology can be discovered in Tolkien’s complex universe. Professor Tolkien, being one of the few people who can see the vestiges of the magical Norse era, included the noble Norse spirit  into  his own world and brought it to life again in this way.
